Former AZ Department of Commerce director and Obama administration official was youngest mayor of Nogales
Marco López, a Phoenix business owner and former mayor of Nogales, Arizona, has announced he will run for Arizona governor as a Democrat. The office will be up for election in 2022.
López, 42, is a former Obama administration official and former director of the Arizona Commerce Department under then Gov. Janet Napolitano.
The University of Arizona alum became the youngest mayor of that border city at age 22.
Since that time, he has served as director of the Arizona-Mexico Commission followed by director of the Arizona Department of Commerce. From there, he was appointed chief of staff at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency, which is part of U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which Napolitano headed up.
“I’m running for governor because I believe in the promise of Arizona - that Arizona is a place where anything is possible and every family has the chance to succeed, no matter who you are or where you come from,” he said in the press release announcing his candidacy.
In a video released by his campaign earlier this week as part of his announcement, López cited his working-class roots, with a father who worked his way up from plumber to a general contractor and a mother who owned her own small business.
He also said state leaders “let us down” during the coronavirus pandemic by not offering adequate advice and guidelines to protect Arizonans.
His three priorities will be quality education and job training, access to comprehensive health care and “jobs, jobs, jobs.”
His business, International Business Solutions, is a cargo export firm providing strategies and counsel to domestic and international organizations. He also is a founding partner for SkyBridge Arizona, a development at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport that will allow U.S. and Mexican customs officials to jointly inspect and process shipments.
His campaign will release policy plans on health care, economic development, education and the border in the coming months.
